Klaus closed the gap so rapidly she thought they were about to clash foreheads. With stern fingers, he cupped her chin, holding her head securely so she couldn’t look away. He sighed with a heavy head before tilting his gaze upwards, pools of tanbark and melted gold fusing into her face. With his other arm, he held it above her head and leaned his forehead against it.

In a droning slur that had her breath gasping, he whispered, “Do you vant to marry him?”

Her face felt hot. Her knees began to wobble. He did not relax his hard expression; his eyes a deep pull that left her breathless. The stares from the pedestrians slowing to gawk only intensified her anxiety. In a dry rasp, she answered, “No.”

His lips twitched into a lop-sided smirk. “Good. Now, stop fighting me.”
